We decided to go directly to the park where the locks were
in the downtown area. It was less than a 5 minute
ride. Debbie found a place right in
front of the entrance. It is another
beautiful sunny and cool day. We go into
the park and the Visitor’s Center is there giving the facts about the
locks. The grounds around this area are
just beautiful with all kinds of flowers blooming everywhere you looked. You walk through the center and just steps
away is a two story platform you can climb to view the locks. The amazing thing is that they are right
there in front of you! You are so close
that you could actually jump from the viewing platform onto the ships as they
pass. You can also see the expansion
bridge that spans the border between the US and Canada. We were lucky to get the chance to see two
really large container or tanker ships that passed through from opposite
sides. Very cool to see. When we went to leave, the gate was closed
and padlocked where we entered. We went
back in to ask how to get out and it seemed there was an “issue” going on
there. Lots of border patrol agents and
police from Homeland Security. We were
able to get out and never did find out what was going on but there were
security vehicles everywhere. We walked
through all of the shops around the area and then stopped at a little place and
had lunch overlooking the locks and the park.
It was a really nice morning and afternoon. After lunch we left to head on to St. Ignace
where we were spending the night.
