Where’s Waldo? We found him! July 20, 2015

Shortly after getting on the road we found a turn off for Waldo.  People have been searching for him for years and we found him!  We didn’t stop to pick him up though.  We stopped at a Visitor Center when we got to Door County and ran into a very talkative woman who lived in Michigan but not in the area.  Her daughter was getting married in this area so she was seeing what to do with guests we supposed.  We are in Manitowac, WI…where Sputnik crashed on September 6, 1962.  We picked up some brochures and go back in the car headed up the coast to Sturgeon’s Bay.  This area has many farms and dairy seems to be the theme here.  So we continue to look for cheese shops as we go.   We came to a little city of Kewaunee where we saw our first lighthouse on Lake Michigan and really our first unobstructed view of the lake.  Most of the little towns though this area are remote and isolated.  We wonder how they get along out in these areas in the winter months.  The one thing we have noticed about Wisconsin in general is how neat and clean everything in this state is.  Everyone’s houses, property, yards are manicured precisely, flowers are beautiful and no junk or trash to be seen in the poorest of areas.

After reaching and driving around Sturgeon’s Bay which is the largest city on this peninsula and midway to the end, we started heading back toward Green Bay.  We found a cheese store that was wonderful and bought some to snack on.  It was called Renard’s and they also have an online business.  We are now on a quest to find Mary Ann’s Amish Bakery that is in Bonduel which is on the way to Keshena where we are staying tonight.  We don’t know what happened to Mary Ann but we couldn’t find her and Debbie was so disappointed.  We arrived at the Menominee Hotel and Casino our stop for the night.  We played a little while and went to the buffet since it seemed everyone in town was having dinner there.  The buffet was $4.99 for pressure fried chicken.  We had to wait about a half hour in line with the locals to get in.  I had never heard of pressure fried chicken but Debbie had.  It was surprisingly good and everything was replenished so often that it was all so fresh it was amazing for a buffet.  After dinner we played 3 card poker for a while since the table limits were low and wound up at the end playing Pitch Blackjack which neither of us had ever played before.  Once we got the hang of it, it was fun.  We were at the table with a local couple…Betty and Bob who come for the buffet every Monday and then stay and play cards…their big night out I guess.  They were fun and funny and we had fun dealers too.  Every time we play somewhere new we learn something new about the games.  He told Debbie never split anything that begins with the letter “F”…fours, fives, face cards and frickin threes he said.  We laughed so hard about that.  He also said all it takes to win is a chip and a chair!  We had a great time there.  We had a nice room and even $3.00 off breakfast the next morning.  Day three is now done.
